The ruse with the peat ship

is one of the most famous stories in Dutch history and a standout episode of the Eighty Years' War. On the night of March 4, 1590, seventy-five soldiers hid beneath a cargo of peat and caught the Spanish garrison at the Castle of Breda completely by surprise. Often compared to the Trojan Horse, this daring plan led to the capture of Breda and remains a symbol of ingenuity and courage.

A story close to the heart of every true Bredanaar, someone from Breda, and a perfect piece for anyone who appreciates Dutch history, strategic brilliance, and quiet heroism.

The Ruse with the Peat Ship is also featured in the book Breda Folktales (Folktales of Breda), illustrated by artist Melanie Drent.
